~ beware of car rides ~

21 October 2006

i’m pretty proud to say that i haven’t been throwing up during this pregnancy. i do experience sickness accompanied by tummy pain almost every morning, but the sickness is quite light that i never have to throw up — although the pain is a different story. i probably concentrate too much on how to handle the pain that i didn’t even think about throwing up…

anyways, tonight was the first time i ended up emptying my stomach content into the toilet bowl… and it’s all because of a taxi ride.

it all started when i was still living in NYC. you know how crazy those NYC taxi drivers are… i always come out of the cab feeling sick. i used to get teased by friends, because whenever we go out to parties or bars, i would look drunk before even touching any drinks. if we go out by taxi, my bar visits usually start with me throwing up in the bathroom before ordering any drinks. how sad…

since then, i almost always get car-sick if i sit on the backseat of cabs, whether it’s in Jakarta, Melbourne, or Singapore. so far, i deal with it by asking ari to hold my wrist tightly. it has a similar effect to the ReliefBand, but instead of sending electrical pulse, ari just holds the wrist tight. it usually works well, and settles down my violent stomach.

last night, however, nothing worked. we had dinner with Melvyn at Arab Street. i was fine during dinner. but by the time we were in the cab on our way home, the food was all the way up in my throat. i was green and we’re not even half-way home. it felt like the longest trip from Arab Street to Holland Village.

amazingly, i managed not to throw up in the cab. ari stopped the cab a few blocks away from the house, and walking at night felt much better than being in the car with extra freezing AC. once we reached the house, i tried to hold back. but within less than 10 minutes in the house, my dinner of falafel and houmous left my tummy and i ended up with an empty stomach again.

we made a bowl of soup to fill it up and went to bed right away.

so, i guess, the longest taxi ride i can handle is from Holland Village to Botanical Gardens. beyond that, i need a barf bag with me.

Puking? That means it’s a girl ;> When i was pregnant with Noe, i didn’t have any nausea, but I was always sleepy. BTW perhaps you’d have less nausea if you take a bus? But true enough, be prepared with a barf bag.

yep, i’m okay with busses. last night, we left arab street after midnight, so i couldn’t really take the bus. we haven’t tried MRT, though….

is the barfing = girl thing true? but i’m also sleepy all the time… what does that mean?

Yang sabar ya Mba… Vomiting of Pregnancy itu baru bakal berhenti setelah 3 bulan masa kehamilan ( first trimester of gestation ). Normalnya sih minggu ke 13 juga udah berhenti total kok…

Kalo di Medical World istilahnya “Morning Sickness”. terjadinya cuma di pagi & malam hari. Normalnya sih ngga akan terjadi di siang hari.

So, if u wanna safe ride with a cab, why don’t u travel at day time ??? hehehe… :p

Can’t say I can offer any advice or tips on how to handle pregnancy-carsickness… I get carsick and it’s best to sit up front next to the driver so you can always see the horizon and the space ahead of you… Don’t know if that helps in your case, though :-/

yeah, i used to do that. actually, i would rather drive than be a passenger. but i think it won’t matter where i sit, because the sickness was quite violent. i think it just comes with the pregnancy… hehehe.

I found out that I’d have far less chance (or zero chance) of getting carsick if I was the driver and not the passenger. So maybe you can ask mr. chauffeur if you can drive the taxi instead :)
unless if he wants to clean up the mess on the back seat later on.

i know!!! that’s why i like driving! haha. but i think the cab driver will kick us out of the cab if we ask to drive his taxi :P
