~ LOTR: ROTK ~

03 January 2004

a little bit late, but last night i finally saw the last installment of the Lord of The Rings trilogy, Return of the King. ari picked me up from work (he didn’t get lost, thank god) and we walked around Chapel Street, buying comics, having dinner and all. it was a perfect weather to walk around. but aftera few hours of walking around with no purpose, especially since both of us didn’t feel like shopping, we decided to go to the theater and see what’s available.

the theater was packed. and i thought Melbourne people are very quiet when watching a movie in a theater. there were barely any sound. i felt like an ass for laughing out loud.

the movie is — as usual — absolutely stunning. the battle scenes are entertaining and amazing (the scene when Legolas killed the oliphaunt beast… my jaw dropped!). aragorn is still cool and droolable as ever. the frodo+sam+gollum adventure to the Mordor is crafted so well that sam almost made me cry. i would like to have a friend like him, please… and the humor! i bow to Peter Jackson for keeping the movie funny and fresh, even though it’s based on over a century old books. basically, the movie was just incredible!

with that said, i have to say that the movie is very much over-simplified. since i just finished the third book a few months ago, the story is still lingering in my mind. there are certain scenes and characters that i wanted to see in the movie, but didn’t appear. and the other way around: there are scenes that is exclusively appear on the movie but not in the book.

a few random comments:

  • i wanted to see Prince Imrahil. i wished he would show up.
  • i was curious how Sharky to be portrayed in the film. sadly, he never appeared.
  • i think the scene where King of Nazgul died was cheezy. i like the book version ten times better.
  • i was quite dissapointed that the army of Dúnedain didn’t appear in the movie.
  • i guess, it’s good that they left the love story betwen Eowyn and Faramir off the screen. although i think it’d be cute to see.
  • i wanna see more Saruman :(

i’m not saying i don’t like the movie. in fact, i think the movie was better if it was simplified. i can imagine how draggin git would be if it was following the book accurately. it will be a one helluva boring movie (can you imagine seeing aragorn, legolas, even gimli singing every 5 minutes? it’ll feel like you’re watching Sound of Music).

ps: so, i heard a gossip that Peter Jackson is working on The Hobbit, the prequel of the trilogy… is that true?

oh, hobitton ternyata jadi tourist attraction, toh? if i were visiting NZ, i’d definitely make my reservation. although i’m not sure if i want to pay 40 bucks to pee… hehe.

Argh, I gotta finish the book sometime this holiday. Everyone in Sydney was really quiet too, I think they’re just speechless. I believe.

It’d be fun to see the movie version of the Hobbit. Wonder who’s gonna play young Bilbo and all other dwarves?

yes.. peter jackson is working on “the hobbit” hence the dragging ending in the shire.. and you’re right.. there are too many scenes were cut.. i just finished watching the extended version of the two towers.. banyak banget yang di cut.. padahal bagus2.. i guess they couldn’t have enough space to put all in the movie.. padahal udah 3½ jam. and yeah.. i do want to see the love story between eowyn & faramir.. and more of saruman.. and of course the dunedein.. di extended version of two towers, dijelasin dikiiitt banget aragorn being a dunedein, tapi tetep kurang banyak..

can’t wait for the extended version of ROTK!! :)

i haven’t seen any of the extended version, although i heard it makes the movie story closer to the book…

tapi gue kebayang sih, kalo semua detail yang ada di buku ditaro di movie, pasti movienya jadi jelek. it’s going to drag forever! (and i don’t really wanna see aragorn or legolas singing every 5 minutes either!)

ttg hobbit, bukannya hobbit itu ceritanya sebelum LOTR?

thalia | 6 January 2004 - 12:22 | reply

iya.. the extended version is like another hour.. so you can imagine how drag it would be for people to be in the theater for almost 5 hours.. although, i wouldn’t mind.. hehhe..

iya the hobbit is the prequel to the trilogy.. so it’d tell the stories about the hobbits before the fellowship.. gue juga belom baca sih bukunya.. but i know tolkien wrote it before the lotr.

Lord of the Rings III is the geatest movie. it doesn’t happen very often when a screen version of a book is as powerful as the book itself… It’s more than words can say, and it deserves the best of awards.
