the other prop that we made for the Trick or Treat Party was the two giant eyeballs. just like many years earlier, we use the same stuff: round paper lantern from IKEA. these are pretty easy to make.
for each eye, you need:
- round, white paper lantern. we were planning to use the big ones, but they were infected with mould. so we ended up using the small ones (the heads of last year’s spiders);
- colored/tinted acetate film. we use black, because we want to make a dark iris. you can use blue, green, or even red to make it scarier 🙂
- black opaque paper;
- thick acrylic yarn, in red and blue (for veins);
- transparent tapes.
first, we cut the acetate film in circle to make an iris. then cut the black paper in a smaller circle to make the center part of the eye. stick the smaller circle on to the center of the acetate film and stick the whole thing into the white paper lantern.
take the red yarn, separate the strands of the yarn to make it look like the veins branching out. stick it to the lantern using the transparent tape. don’t forget to leave a long “tail” of each vein…
use only the red one for the veins around the iris. then, add the blue veins only at the back of the eyeball.
once you’re done, hang it on the ceiling. you can spread around the tail or just leave it hanging. either way, we think it looks quite creepy.
once it’s dark, turn the light on… and you got a bright shining eyes 🙂
