when Aldo messaged me back in July about getting involved in Super Robot Day Bandung, ari and i agreed right away, that we will participate. we still didn’t know what we were going to make, but it’s Super Robot! we grew up with them!
after a week of doing nothing, we finally started thinking. originally, we were going to do digital illustration or pixel-art stuff. the problem is our home computer no longer has photoshop or illustrator. and working on ari’s work computer after hour would not give us enough time…
so we came up with pixel-art of the Super Robot, drawn by ari and aina on the computer (aina really did some of the God Sigma’s body!), and i translated them into a cross-stitching craft work.
the pixel art was done fairly quickly… i think ari did it in one night. on the other hand, i haven’t done cross-stitching for years… maybe in over 25 years (i think i made some cross-stitch stuff when i was still in junior high)! so i kinda underestimated how long it would take…
Voltus V, the first one i did, which is also the simplest one among the three, took me 2.5 days to finish. i was getting worried that we won’t make the deadline, so i asked aldo for extension.
the Go Shogun was next. by this time, i have gotten a hang of cross-stitiching, so even though the robot was larger and a bit more complicated, i could finish it in 2 days (barely sleeping, though!).
God Sigma is a different beast, though… i made many mistakes along the way and had to redo many parts many times… it took me almost 5 days for this little guy… huhuhu.
ari framed it and shipped it to Bandung. it was right after Hari Raya Eid holiday, which is the biggest holiday in Indonesia. we were sooo worried that there will be delay on the shipment, or worse… they lose the items! it was a nervewrecking wait. i would definitely cry if the artwork got lost or got there too late…
then, 5 days before the event, i got this image from Aldo in my whatsapp…
what a huge relief!
i was so relieved that i completely forgot to send our bio and the title of the pieces. to tell you the truth, we have not thought of the names either… then the event started. it turns out that Aldo made up the title: 8-bit Needles.
wow, perfecto!
we love it! thank you, Do, for the name!
