Halloween Prep: Princess Bubblegum

This is a backtrack entry from last year!  It’s the making of Aina’s Princess Bubblegum costume that she wore during Halloween Night last year. A bit late, but better late than never, right? 🙂

Other than the Ice King costume for Ari, we also made a Princess Bubblegum costume for Aina. This costume was a lot of fun to make, because other than the dress, we also had to make the candy basket/container that fits the theme. We chose to make a Peppermint Butler bag to match.

Princess Bubblegum Dress and Hair

I was kinda worried about this dress. It looks quite simple to make, but I have never sewn anything with arms. All dresses and tops I’ve made have all been sleeveless.

After walking around Spotlight, I decided to use a light scuba fabric for this dress. I was afraid I would screw this up if I used a more complicated fabric. With this fabric, I don’t have to worry about fraying and wrinkling. Less things to think about… And I thought, the scuba fabric will retain the shape well and make it look cartoony, like how Princess Bubblegum is.

The sewing process went pretty smoothly. I didn’t do any big mistakes… there were small ones, like a slighty crooked collar and uneven stitching here and there. But they were kinda hidden, thanks to PB’s super long hair.

 

 

And I’m very happy to see that it fits Aina perfectly.

For the hair, it was a bit more complicated. Originally, to achieve a cartoony look, Ari planned to use pink foam sheets to make the hair along with the crown. But after a few tries, we realized that a solid-helmet-like hair would not work. Aina couldn’t turn her head because the long, stiff hair would stay in place behind her shoulders as her head turns… well, because the helmet hair was as long as her knee, she couldn’t even turn her hips.

So we gave up and bought a pink wig (along with my black wig for my Marceline costume):

Thank god we could find a very long pink wig on time. The crown was pretty easy to make. We just had to make sure it stayed up on that slippery wig. But no worries, we got tons of hairpins laying around 🙂

 

Peppermint Butler Bag

Then, to complete the look, Aina made and sew a Peppermint Butler bag for herself. This bag will be used for the candy container.

We first tried to find a circular box. We found many biscuits cans, but since we wanted to make a hole to put the candy in, we decided to go with a cardboard or papier mâché container. We cut a hole on the top of the Butler’s head, and painted the face and the blue pants. the red stripes were made by sticking red-colored paper. This was easier for Aina to do than painting the stripes with red paint.

After that, i helped cut some felt for the Butler’s arms and legs. Aina did all the sewing, filling and glueing them into the body. She was soooo proud of her first ever Halloween prop that she made for herself 🙂
