ari: kalo jadi om yang ketok2 di belakang (tukang bangunan), mau? (how about the guy next door who hammer things? — the house next door is being renovated, so this refers to the construction workers. )
aina: engga. (nope.)
ari: aina mau jadi designer? hee hee. (do you want to be a designer? hee hee.)
aina: ngga. (no.)
thalia: *chuckled*… kalo jadi ilustrator? kerjanya ngegambar terus-terusan, lho! (how about an illustrator? they draw all the time, you know?)
aina: umm, engga. (umm, nope.)
thalia: oh, aina mau jadi penari ballet? (oh, do you want to be a ballerina?)
aina: *eyes light up* oooh! mauuuuu!! (oooh! yes, i doooooo!!)
thalia: lebih mau jadi kasir apa jadi penari ballet? (would you rather be a supermarket cashier or a ballerina?)
aina: *thinking* umm, penari ballet… (umm, ballerina…) *starts twirling around while singing “la la la”…*
ari: kalo penyanyi? aina mo jadi penyanyi? (how about singer? do you want to be a singer?)
aina: engga, penari ballet aja. (naah, i’d rather be a ballerina.)

After my daughter turned three, she told me that she was going to be three forever. I asked her why and she said that if she turned four she would have to turn five and then she would have to go to school.
I went away and thought about it as she was very serious. I came back and said that was fine but she would not have more birthdays then. She went off to think about this and came back and said, “OK, I’ll be four.”
She is nearly thirty and still loves birthdays. When she a little older, I had to put a limit on the time she talked about her birthday as it would have a major topic for the whole year from right after she had another one!

unfortunately, we didn’t record the conversation… but i think, one of these days, we will be able to capture her twirling and pretending to be a ballerina on the camera 🙂
